The Irish News Young News Readers Media Project

13th Jun 2023

Primary 5 & 6 have really enjoyed participating in the Young News Readers Literacy Project between March and May this year.  This is a fantastic Literacy project aimed at children aged 8-12.  The pupils loved taking part in the lessons each week and participating in the weekly tasks.

Some of the activities and tasks we took part in:

  • Learning about how a newspaper works
  • Learning about trusted news sources like The Irish News versus “fake news”
  • Interviewing family members or friends who have had a positive influence on our lives
  • Learning to use newspaper terminology like by-line, caption, etc.
  • Creating our own captions for photographs
  • Making Wellbeing Wishes by coming up with one thing we can do each day to improve wellbeing
  • Writing our own news articles
  • Participating in Earth Day activities by making pledges to help protect our planet
  • Seeing the power of positive thinking by creating compliments
  • Designing a newspaper advertisement for our school
  • Increasing self-esteem by creating personal fact word clouds

We hope that our participation in the projects ahs helped to develop and grow awareness in our pupils of the important tant role newspapers can play in our lives.
